The Vought F6U-1 Pirate was an American jet-powered in-flight fighter from the Cold War period. The prototype flight took place in 1946. And shortly after that, serial production began, which led to the production of 30 aircraft of this type. The drive was provided by a single engine Westinghouse J34-WE-30A turbojet . The plane's top speed was 960 km / h, and the maximum range was 1,880 kilometers. The on-board armament consisted of four 20mm HS.404 cannons.
The Vought F6U-1 Pirate was commissioned by the US Navy, which wanted to acquire a jet-powered in-flight fighter in the mid-1940s. The manufacturer, working under a lot of pressure from the ordering party, carried out a prototype test already in 1946, which, however, showed flaws in the structure, especially its unsatisfactory performance and problems with lateral stability in flight. Despite this, the US Navy placed an order for the first serial batches, which included the production of 30 aircraft, delivered by 1950. The tests carried out in US Navy units confirmed the fatal opinion about the plane. Ultimately, the F6U never reached operational readiness, and the finished planes were used to train mechanics and crews on the ground. The US Navy was the only user of these failed planes.
