To some extent, SFOR has been linked to the activities carried out in Kosovo since 1999 by the Kosovo Force (KFOR) aimed at preventing the displacement and persecution of Kosovars by the Serbian government led by Slobodan Milosevic. A significant difference between the KFOR and SFOR forces was their numbers - the former, at the time of the launch of the operation, consisted of around 50,000 soldiers from over 30 countries around the world.
